Bait & Switch Ripoff

Booked through Southwest Airlines. Got there and the mid-size was actually a PT Cruiser. Asked for any other options, because I wanted something with a trunk. Switched me to another car that still didn't have a trunk, but had a hideaway for my laptop. Asked 4 times to Abraham (by the way had to wait 45 minutes in their line) if the price was the same and he kept saying yes it was. Got the car and it only had a half tank of fuel in it so I had to go back into the main area and get the paperwork noted. Returned the car 3 days later and it was $80.00 more than quoted. Lauren Yeo, the Station Manager would not even listen to my argument. I travel a lot for business to Phoenix, and I will never use Payless there, or elsewhere again. Plus everytime I walk past their rental counter, I will warn people waiting in line about bait and switch by Payless. I notice on this site that there are a number of other complaints about Bait and Switch tactics by Payless. They Suck!

Isn't this illegal bait and switch?

Wish I'd checked this before I booked. And, Unless you enjoy being screwed, avoid these jerks...I found their rental rate at Travelocity, which promised that an Economy car would hold 4 adults and 2 large suitcases. When I went to the counter to pick up my reserved car, I was informed that their only economy car was a SmartCar! (Clearly, does not hold 2 adults and 2 suitcases, let alone 4...) I was traveling with another adult, two suitcases and two carryons. Due to the late hour (flight delays) and my jetlag, I paid an additional $20/day for "the next step up": a VW Passat and spent a half-hour trying to convince a rude clerk that my credit card covers insurance and that I HAVE proof of insurance from my home state that covers rental cars out of state. (He wanted to charge another $5/day for that, claiming a "new state law" that required it. I tried contacting Travelocity and go no response whatsoever from their "customer service" department. I will never use Travelocity OR Payless again.

We had the exact same issue in Denver, October, 2016. I reserved an Economy car -- listed as Hundai Accent or similar.

The car they assigned to us was the Smart Car. Hardly similar. In order to fit two adults and a suitcase we were forced to "upgrade" to another car at significant cost which ended up being slightly over double our initial contract.

they were unapologetic and when i called customer service they were rude and refused to acknowledge the discrepancy between cars. i won't ever use them again.

SIMPLY A DISHONEST COMPANY THAT SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN FOR ILLEGAL PRACT. THIS COMPANY SHOULD BE IIVESTIGATED BY THE FTC AND CLOSED DOWN.

I PICKED UP A CAR AT: 6465 AIRPORT ROAD MISSISSAUGA ON L4V - 1E4 ONTARIO CANADA I clearly refused insurance and it was added DECEPTIVELY. All kind of charges are added without you knowledge by DISHONEST EMPLOYEES. I now receive a bill for an unpaid toll charge (I am sure that I paid everything). They say that I did not pay a toll of 9 dollars and they send a bill for 73.95 dollars. FILED A COMPLAINT TO THE FTC AT https://econsumer.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ DO THE SAME. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THEM. I HOPE THY GET INVESTIGATED AND CLOSED. AVOID THIS COMPANY LIKE THE PLAGUE; they are running a scam and they know it.

Horrid Service from Agent

Ordered a rental car from Payless on line. The agent tried to charge more for the car. My agreement said $184 for one week. He had the price up to $399.00 for insurance coverage. I had coverage. David argued with me for over an hour. I was ready to walk away when he finally honored by agreement sheet. I tried to use another agent there and he said David was the best and he could not help me. Someone is putting money in their pockets and ripping off customers. I will never use Payless again. David was very angry that I would argue with him on the price. He had me trying to contact my insurance agent in Maine.

PAYLESS CAR RENTAL: Caveat Emptor

I am a Payless employee. Customers need to be aware of two fraudulent business practices they employ. Roadside assistance will be added to your rental contract without your knowledge. This runs $2.99/day. This iservice is already included with your credit card & your own automobile insurance (for $6/year on avg). They will also attempt to sell you fuel at a discounted rate. There is no discount. They purposely tell you the fuel charge but leave out the taxes & fees. At airport locations these charges run an additional 35%-50%. You'll only see the "discount rate" (before taxes) on your contract as the taxes & fees are lumped in with the rest of the rental.

Reservation. For a car was made through our southwest agent everything was confirmed at a certain price for our entire vacation . When we returned the vehicle there were over$ 500.00 extra charges. They charged for a car upgrade, insurance, which we did not ask for ( showed them our insurance card when we picked up the car). $10. A day for extra driver. Then they said we brought the car back late. We got to the airport 4 hour's early . The car was rented to meet our flight plan. We will never rent with them again be very aware of them

Payless rental cars

Rented a car in sanfracisco From Payless rentals and was charged 50.00 for toll bridge after I already paid the vms for fine. Just because they can. Payless should be ashame of their selves. I have never rented from a off the wall car rental company and never will again.i should had knowned when I seen the rental car offices and car lot. It all looked halfass and shady. The people running the offices and front counter looked liked convicts. It!s a shame that Payless has to screw its customer out of money for no reason but greed. When I called Payless telling them that I already pay the toll fine they referred me to vms. So I called vms they told me that I had to pay a extra 50.00 for no reason because they had my credit card number so I was screwed. I would of known this I would never had rented from a off the wall chicken *** rental car company.

Payless car rental auto ORLANDO airport AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL

Disgusting lack of any kind of customer service. Olrlando airport. Treat you as if they are doing you a favor. The one I had looks like a nazi...and acts that way too. Am I allowed to submit her name? You will know her when you see her. Absolutely disgusting. They flog their company insurance by scaring the *** out of people. Claimed my reservation was different than what I confirmed then said I had to pay 4 TIMES the quoted rate. Who does this? Payless does. Definitely, USE ANOTHER RENTAL CAR RENTAL COMPANY! This one stinks real bad. Hope you don't get sucked in.

PAYLESS SHOULD BE PAYMORE CAR RENTAL

Rented car over internet. Got to PHX, AZ told car not available that we would have to rent an SUV and pay for the extra charges. Rental was to be $253.17 and Got all the way up to $554.00!! WTF When we got to where the car pickup was the SUV was not ready and there were several cars that we had asked for ready to go. Man in garage said it all depends on what the upstairs rental agent, who are very rude, want to rent out!! Finally got it down to $384.12 and still arguing and it has been 5 weeks. Run don't walk away from Payless Car Rental. They are crooks and liars. We were trying to go visit my sick mother and all they cared about was making money off of my family.

Payless Car - DO NOT RENT FROM THIS CO!!

Payless at the Airport in Denver, CO It is in your best interest to find an honest and reputable company. This company DOES NOT SAVE YOU MONEY!!! They did not tell us we were being charged extra for items that were not on the original estimate. They also charged us daily for Roadside Assistance which we did not initial for and they do not answer their phone when we have been trying to reach them. This rental company continually lied and tried to sell us an upgrade by telling us that the midsize car we rented was gutless and couldn't go up the hills. It was totally fine ~ not gutless at all!

San Diego Payless Car Rental over charge scam

Buyer beware! Rental car companies make a lot of their money from selling upgrades and options coverages. There is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is them "slipping in" extra coverages that you verbally declined [or making a mistake they won't admit to] as happened to me. I've rented many cars. I always take the sub-compacts and decline all extra options as I did in San Diego with Payless Car Rental last week. The contract was printed by Jonathan who was at the counter asking the questions and filling out the form. He laid the contract down an drew a number [10?] of small circles for initials and 1 large circle for a signature. [as all car rental companies do]. I am convinced that Jonathan intentionally overcharged me by adding in the Collision Damage Waiver [I never take this] thinking that I'd miss it [which I did] and that I wouldn't notice it when I brought the car back [I did]. I was upset because I felt I was Ripped Off! The manager there was Mark Knight and the Person who checked me in was Erika. They were professional in hearing my complaints [as was Jonathan-although he hung up the phone on me as our conservation was going in circles] because they knew they HAD ME! I didn't catch the over charge before the car was driven off the lot. My hope is that their future customers think twice about using them and that future consumers take their time when signing anything. Caveat Emptor.

Do Not rent form Payless Car Rental Company

I rented a car from Payless Car Rental in Albuquerque, NM. A rock chipped the windshield and gave a tiny mar in the windshiels right behind the review mirror. I was honest with the compnany and pointed out the ding. Now they are charging $84.49. Physical damage $42.80, Loss of Use for 1 day $16.69, and Administrative Fee $25.00. The car company is not supplying the documents for my credit card to cover the physical damage. I will NEVER rent from this company again and have learned that honesty gets you nowhere! The manager in New Mexico was not very helpful and never returned my phone call.

Payless Car Rental was my absolutely worst experience with any car rental company ever.

Dispute the charges with your credit card company, they'll probably back down. You have 60 days after the cutoff of credit card statement showing the charges.

Thanks for the warning, I'll claim ignorance if I get any windshield chips.

Payless -- avoid; no bargain

Updated by user Jul 24, 2016

I am happy to mark this matter as resolved as of July 22. After considerable negotiation, Ocean Dental/Cancun made a significant contribution to my costs in order for me to go to Cancun again and have the problematic work redone--at no additional cost. I received careful and courteous attention and I am satisfied with the result.

Original review Apr 07, 2012
. The business model on which Payless operates became clear when we approached the desk: 1. Keep the already-exhausted customer waiting. After a long flight, wait for a shuttle, long shuttle ride and stand in line, keep him/her waiting even longer -- the better to reduce resistance to the abuses to come. . (see below) 1. Sell the upgrade, whether you actually have it available or not. 2. Don't mention them, but Pack in extra charges. $10/day for a spouse to be an added driver? No one else charges for that. "It's on the website." No, it is not -- but we're tired and have already waited so long to finish this business that you can take advantage--and you do. This time. 3. Once the credit card is swiped and the contract signed. . . . Let the customer wait and give her ***. At the car pickup point, six people wait in yet another Payless line while one, ONE pathetic employee tries to process returning cars and inspect and sign out new rentals. Cars are dirty and damaged, so people who thought they were exiting this *** are instead returning to document existing damage or complain about filth in the car. When we finally get to the head of this latest line, the "upgraded" car is not available. It is supposedly being washed and will be available in five minutes. After 15 minutes we demand the smaller car originally reserved--we have been in this nightmare Payless process for a full hour by now. The upgraded car suddenly appears. It is still soapy and has not been vacuumed; trash remains under the seats"”but we are tired and have a 2.5 hr drive ahead of us. We drive away. 4. Stick the customer one last time when the car is returned. Aside from the outrageous charge per gallon, call a hair short of a full-reading "1/4 empty." When I objected, it was checked again and adjusted to 1/8, but at $6.99/gal. Fine, get me out of here and let me never deal with this company again.
